Sustainable Transport Africa
Sustainable Transport Africa is a non-profit, Non-Governmental Organization registered in Kenya with the primary objective of making transport more accessible to the lower income, physically challenged and financially disadvantaged groups, while reducing adverse environmental and health impacts.
Sustainable Transport Africa focuses on sustainable transport and development, making transport more accessible in a sustainable manner hence reducing its adverse environmental impacts. This is through promotion of, and lobbying for:- Non-Motorised Transit (NMT), Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT), other forms of MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), Land Use Planning (LUP), Transit oriented cities, Clean fuels, Green transport, Traffic Demand Management (TDM), Sustainable rural transport and Sustainable shipping.
These actions will be carried out and supported at all times ensuring that sustainability and affordability for all is guaranteed, while realizing gains in reduced healthcare costs from harmful emissions associated with the transport sector resulting in poor air quality.
MAIN OBJECTIVE
Making transport more accessible to the lower income, physically challenged and financially disadvantaged groups while reducing the adverse environmental and health impacts particularly in urban areas where the public suffers from growing serious respiratory illnesses, cancer and premature deaths as a result of harmful emissions from the rapidly expanding transport sector with children suffering the greatest impacts.
The urban poor who don’t own vehicles are seriously disadvantaged as they are unable to meet the significant healthcare costs with breadwinners dying prematurely leaving behind destitute families.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- Reduce the harmful impact of the transport sector on public health and our environment through the promotion of policies to encourage modal shifts.
- Create public awareness on the significant health and environmental impacts.
- Introduce incentives such as CO2 labeling and eco-taxes to encourage modal shifts that reduce emissions per commuter.
- Take advantage of the elimination of lead and reduction of sulphur in our fuels to enable the use of technologies such as catalytic converters and particulate filters to reduce harmful and GHG emissions.
- Enhance the road safety campaign by encouraging regular vehicle inspection and maintenance.
- Engage in extensive capacity building programs for the effective implementation of the listed objectives

Our team members
The leadership of Sustainable Transport Africa has a wealth of experience in the continental and international transport sector. We are dedicated to supporting the reduction of CO2 emissions though substantially reducing the average fuel consumption national vehicle fleets on the continent and substantially reducing black carbon emissions while actively supporting modal shifts in transport to mass rapid transit systems and non-motorized transport.
Two of the directors Nyaga Kebuchi and Henry Kamau graduated in the United Kingdom (UK), in mechanical engineering and vehicle design engineering. They have completed engineering courses in Germany and Sweden, and worked and studied in a range of other countries. The other director, Kioko Muthui, is a vehicle designer who has designed for Daimler and Hyundai trucks, and is awaiting international patents.
